What this site is
A calculator that estimates the maximum metered fare for a class A or B taxi in Northern Ireland, using the official tariff. It is an estimate only. The meter in the cab decides the fare, and drivers can charge less.
Privacy notice
Belfast Books 2.0 Limited is the data controller for the information described here. We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (registration number ZC131377).
What we use, and why
| What | Why and how |
|---|---|
| Addresses you type to look up a journey | Sent through our server to a map service (OpenStreetMap's search and routing, or OpenRouteService) to work out the distance. We do not save them against you. The answer for an address is kept temporarily at Cloudflare, for up to 30 days, so repeat journeys are quicker. It is stored against the address text, not against you. |
| Fare feedback, only if you choose to send it | We save your answer (about right, too high or too low), any meter price and note you enter, the distance, the rate and the estimated fare, the journey time, and the country your visit came from (worked out from your IP address, which we do not keep). We do not ask for a name, email or address. Please do not put personal details in the note. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests: checking the calculator is accurate. We delete feedback older than 24 months. The clear-out runs each time new feedback is saved. It is stored in a Cloudflare database. |
| Technical data | Our host, Cloudflare, receives your IP address and browser details to deliver the page and protect it from abuse. We use short-lived counters in server memory to limit abuse. We do not store IP addresses in our database. |
Who else sees it
- Cloudflare, which hosts the site and its database.
- The map services named above, which receive the address text you ask us to look up.
- The UK government's bank holiday data and the European Central Bank's exchange rates are fetched by our server. No personal data is sent to them.
We do not sell your data. Cloudflare and the map services may handle data outside the UK, and they use their own standard safeguards for that.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, object to how we use it, or ask us to restrict it. Feedback is anonymous, so we may not be able to find your entry, but email yourdata@belfastbooks.co.uk and we will help if we can. If you are unhappy, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Cookies
This site does not set cookies and does not use local storage. We do not add analytics or tracking scripts to it. The fonts are served from this site, not from Google. Because of that there is no cookie banner.
If you follow a link to another site, that site may set its own cookies. See the section on links below.
Adverts, affiliate links and tips
- The banners are adverts. They are labelled "Ad" on the banner.
- Some links are affiliate links, and are labelled "Ad, affiliate link". These are the Libro.fm and ClickFunnels banners, and the Claude invite link in the footer. If you buy through them, Belfast Books may earn a commission, and it costs you nothing extra.
- Clarity Call, Marketing Clarity Call and the Author Reality Check are services of Mr Books at willmybooksell.com. Prices and terms are on those pages and can change.
- The ClickFunnels offer, and its price, are set by ClickFunnels, not by us. Check the offer page for the current terms.
- Tips are voluntary payments made through PayPal. A tip does not buy anything and does not change the estimate.
Other sites we link to have their own privacy and cookie policies. We are not responsible for them.
Terms of use
- The calculator gives an estimate of the legal maximum fare for class A and B taxis, worked out from the official tariff (SR 2023 No. 185) and information published by nidirect. Class C and D taxis are not covered.
- Distances come from map data and can differ from what a taxi drives. Traffic and waiting are estimates. Exchange rates are a guide only, and taxis charge in pounds sterling.
- This is information, not advice. The fare card in the taxi and the taxi meter are what count.
- We are not part of, and are not endorsed by, the Department for Infrastructure, nidirect or any taxi operator.
- We try to keep the tariff and holidays up to date, but we cannot promise that they always are. Check the fare card if it matters.
- Nothing here limits your legal rights as a consumer, or our responsibility for anything the law does not let us limit, including death or personal injury caused by negligence, and fraud.
- These terms are governed by the law of Northern Ireland.
